For National Poetry Month, TFP revisits my 2022 tribute to my teacher Gerald Stern. Others knew him as “one of the country's most loved and respected poets.” I knew him as the man who saved my life.
A beautiful tribute to a great mentor, poet and friend who saw your potential and understood your grief. And it captures that incredible time in life when a child becomes a young adult and feels welcomed, validated, and seen by wise adults and teachers who show them how to live (and embrace joy)! Such a great essay!
Oh, Michael, thanks for adding to my continuing education!!! so appreciate your personal sharing. Please give my regards to your mom.
Wonderful tribute! You did make him alive again. Thank you.

Beautiful, thank you for sharing.
John and Steve and Sylvia have me crying tonight, Judge. It’s too warm for a snow angel. I’ll have to find something else to settle into.
Brilliant and beautiful as ever 💙
