Thank you for this sanguine reminder of why nuclear disarmament matters. Here in a small fishing village outside of Nagasaki this morning at 8:15 an announcement came over the loud speaker instructing everyone to stop what they were doing and observe five minutes of silence for the victims of Hiroshima. Watching young and old stop all activity and pray for peace, I wondered what would change, if we did the same in the U.S.

Thank you, Michael, for sharing your experience and reflections. I've read James Carroll's book House Of War, which presents a history of the Pentagon and US actions in WWII.

As you probably know, the US media and Administrations, have long promoted the story that the Hiroshima/Nagasaki murderous annihilations were 'necessary' to end the war with Japan. That is false. Facts are that the Japanese were already negotiating. What the US did was and remains a war crime, fueled by racism and religion, among other things. And it continues.
