A Legacy of Moral Courage
With the welcome release of WSJ reporter Evan Gershkovich, TFP revisits our 2023 interview with Diane Foley, the one person most responsible for changing the way the U.S. negotiates for hostages.
Reports that President Biden had gathered the families of unjustly imprisoned WSJ reporter Evan Gershkovich, former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan, Russian-American journalist Alsu Kurmasheva, and prominent Putin-critic Vladimor Kara-Murza at the White House on Thursday to relay the news that their loved ones were heading home, immediately brought to mind my moving conversation last August with Diane Foley, the mother of slain journalist James Foley and founder of the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation. I repost it below without a paywall so that readers may better understand the tireless work of Diane and her family’s foundation, which I’m certain helped make this historic prisoner release possible.
